POST FALLS, Idaho — A Spokane motorcyclist died Sunday morning after crashing while an Idaho State Police sergeant tried to catch up to him for excessive speeding on Interstate 90.

Eddie Martinez Lopez, 21, of Spokane, Washington, crashed his motorcycle in the roundabout at Prairie Avenue and Chase Road shortly after the sergeant activated lights and sirens.

The sergeant clocked Lopez driving 117 mph on I-90 near Spokane Street and tried to catch up to the motorcycle, the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office said. The motorcycle crashed in the roundabout shortly after.

First responders found Lopez near the crash site. The sergeant began life-saving measures, assisted by sheriff's deputies and fire personnel, but Lopez died at the scene.
