(WHTM) - Speculation is already swirling on who will be Penn State football's next head coach after James Franklin was fired on Sunday.

College football analysts and fans have already begun tossing out names for potential replacements, with one being at the top of experts' lists.

Nebraska head coach and former Nittany Lions linebacker Matt Rhule's name jumped to the top of minds given his ties to the program. A State College native, Rhule was a walk-on linebacker for Joe Paterno in 1994 and became an Academic All-Big Ten honoree.

After his playing career, Rhule was a graduate assistant for Paterno and went on to serve as an assistant coach for several college football programs. He was eventually elevated to head coach at Temple and Baylor before being named the Carolina Panthers head co
