Hundreds of Mapuche protesters and supporters marched on Sunday morning for the resistance of the Mapuche people and the autonomy of Indigenous nations.
The march covered approximately 2.5 kilometers, starting at Cerro Huelén and ending at Los Héroes, in downtown Santiago. Along the route, there were minor clashes with police.
Among the participants were relatives of Julia Chuñil, a Mapuche leader who has been missing since November 2024, in the Los Ríos Region, with no information so far about what happened to her.
The case gained greater public attention after the family’s lawyer revealed that a phone recording allegedly mentioned she had been burned.
The President of Chile, Gabriel Boric, addressed Chuñil’s disappearance in early October, saying that "no one can remain indifferent when a person disappears, as in the case of Julia Chuñil.”
The President also said that it was necessary to “demand that the full truth be known, because in Chile there can be no room for impunity.”
The march took place on the Day of the Meeting of Two Worlds, a holiday formerly known as Columbus Day, which recognize Columbus’ sighting in 1492 of what came to be known as the Americas.
