One of the veteran defensive backs Purdue football planned to rely on this season is no longer part of the program.

IndyStar confirmed safety Crew Wakley left the Boilermaker program last week.

Wakley did not play any defensive snaps against Illinois two weeks ago, and did not travel to Saturday's 27-20 loss at Minnesota. He played in three of the first four games — missing the USC game with injury — and totaled nine tackles and one pass breakup as a reserve.

"We play how we practice, and we're just continuing to grow in practice and get better," defensive coordinator Mike Scherer said Oct. 6 when asked about Wakley's diminished role.
