MAINE, USA — There is no sign that Congress will come to a compromise when the Senate reconvenes on Tuesday, making it nearly certain the shutdown will drag on into a second full week.

Labor representatives and advocates are criticizing the federal closure and voicing concerns that rumored layoffs and unpaid labor could hit thousands of working Mainers and their families hard.

There are roughly 6,000 workers employed by the U.S. Navy at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, and about half live in Maine. Alana Schaeffer represents all the men and women creating the nation's warships as president of the Portsmouth Metal Trades Council.
