FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - Hockey season is officially underway at the Thunder Ice Arena, as the Fort Wayne Komets faced off in their first action of the year against the Iowa Heartlanders.
Fans packed the stands for a fast-paced exhibition matchup.
The Heartlanders struck first, taking an early 1-0 lead in the opening period.
Fort Wayne pushed back, with James Stefan driving the puck down the middle and creating a strong scoring chance, only to be stopped by the Heartlanders’ goalie.
Komets Jalen Smereck also made a strong push up ice, but his attempt was blocked by William Rousseau.
Komets goalie Conner Ungar kept the team in the game with several big saves, keeping the score close throughout.
But despite Fort Wayne’s efforts, the Heartlanders pulled ahead, winning 5-2 in regulation
