LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Each year, the American Heart Association throws their Heart Ball, where they raise money for their cause alongside highlighting the story of one survivor.
This year, on January 24, that story will be the one of Lincoln native Nick Powers.
Thousands of people compete in the Good Life Halfsy every year. Last year, one of them was 35-year-old Powers. A frequent runner, it was his second time participating in the Star City staple.
He was approaching the finish line around the two-hour mark when he lost consciousness and fell to the ground.
“I don’t recall it very well in my memory, I’ve seen video where I’m just slowing down and then I completely collapse,” Powers said. “The next thing I remember is waking up a week later.”
