CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Alceen Ford-Megget's journey away from domestic violence began 40 years ago when her second husband woke her from sleep and played Russian Roulette with a .45 Magnum.

"I grabbed some clothes and took off up the street to this bar, called my sister, and she came and picked me up," Ford-Megget recalled.

On Sunday, she walked alongside other survivors and community members in Mecklenburg County's domestic violence awareness walk, an event created to honor victims and support those still struggling to escape abusive relationships.

"Each step is like every step a woman has to take in order to get out of a situation, and every step that we take here in representation of all those women who have died, who are still struggling, and people like me who are survivors," Ford-Megge
