NEW Kent, Va. (WWBT) - In less than two months, speed cameras installed in New Kent County work zones along I-64 have issued more than 50,000 citations to drivers exceeding the speed limit by 11 MPH or more.

The cameras, which became operational in August, were implemented by Sheriff Lee Bailey in response to a growing number of crashes, particularly on the interstate.

The initiative aims to deter speeding and enhance safety for both construction workers and motorists. While the usual speed limit on I-64 is 70 MPH, it drops to 60 MPH when workers are present in construction zones.

Sheriff Bailey expressed hope that the photo citations would serve as a deterrent. However, the sheer volume of tickets suggests that many drivers have yet to adjust their habits.
