BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - More than 70 Maine veterans received a hero’s welcome at the Bangor International Airport on Sunday.

They were returning from a trip to Washington, DC, hosted by Honor Flight Maine.

“Just saying ‘thanks for your service’ in a big way,” said Marty Sampson, the wife of Burt Sampson, one of the veterans on the trip.

The non-profit provides veterans with flights to the capital so they can visit the war memorials they might not otherwise get to see.

“Going to Washington with all the other troops, and seeing the memorials, and so on, it was moving, it was emotional for me, especially at the Marine Corps monument, and then going to the wall... which brought tears to my eyes,” said Jim Wagstaff, a Vietnam War veteran who flew on the Honor Flight.
