Lidia Thorpe is being investigated by federal police over her “burn down Parliament House” rally cry at a pro-Palestine march at the weekend, authorities have confirmed to 7NEWS.

The senator’s comments have sparked a political firestorm, with Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke urging leaders to avoid inflaming community tensions.

Thorpe said her comments were just a figure of speech and not meant literally, but the AFP’s National Security Investigations team in Victoria began “almost immediately” looking into she had breached legislation.

“This will be done methodically,” a spokesperson told 7NEWS.
