Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed the discovery and stated that a scene guard remains in place while the bones are recovered. A forensic archaeologist will examine the remains to determine their age.
In a statement, the police said: "Officers were called at 2.50pm on Saturday 11 October following the discovery of human bones at Saunton Sands beach. A scene guard remains in place while the items are recovered. These will be examined by a forensic archaeologist to determine their age. Police enquiries are ongoing."
Photos taken by a member of the public show officers digging in the sand, with the area cordoned off using tape and cones. Police lights were also brought to the scene to facilitate work into the evening.
Saunton Sands is a popular beach located near the village of Saunton, known for its longboard surfing. The beach features an exposed westerly aspect, making it a prime location for surfers, but it is also notorious for dangerous riptides. The absence of lifeguards has led to numerous coast guard call-outs due to swimming hazards.
As investigations continue, the police have urged the public to avoid the area while they conduct their enquiries.
