It’s no secret that money is one of the biggest sources of conflict in romantic relationships, with research showing that financial issues are a leading cause of divorce in Canada.

A recent survey from TD found that 56 per cent of Canadians would consider leaving a partner who had bad spending habits. Yet only 23 per cent talked about money before moving in together and 41 per cent waited until after they had moved in together or got married to have those conversations.

“Arguments about money can create division and that sometimes rocks the foundation of the partnership,” says Toronto psychologist Robert Roopa. “Conflicts about money, when unresolved, can lead to greater dissatisfaction and isolation.”
