The United States Navy celebrated its 250th birthday on Monday, and in a city known for its strong military ties, Jacksonville is joining in the nationwide recognition.

A local ceremony is taking place aboard the USS Orleck, a museum ship docked along the St. Johns River in Downtown Jacksonville.

Jacksonville is home to two major naval installations — Naval Air Station Jacksonville and Naval Station Mayport — and plays a significant role in the Navy’s operations in the Southeast. The area has long been recognized as one of the largest Navy communities in the country.
