GOSHEN – Last week’s fatal shooting of an 11-year-old Newburgh boy, allegedly by a 13-year-old, is a factor of the thinking of young people today, Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler said.

The DA told Mid-Hudson News that in today’s world of social media, kids don’t have personal relationships with a lot of their friends.

“Everything is with social media; everything is with text. They don’t have the connection, it appears, with these individuals that they are willing to take these steps of carrying guns, of thinking it’s cool, almost like it’s a video game effect to them, without understanding the consequences will affect them for the rest of their lives,” Hoovler said.

Matthew, the victim in this latest murder, has been described by neighbors as a sweet and polite boy.
