Social Security payments are scheduled to be distributed to Michigan beneficiaries this week. October marks the first month of phasing out paper checks and moving fully online.
Since Tuesday, Sept. 30, the paperless policy — an executive order signed by President Donald Trump in March 2025 — has been in effect. The policy discontinues paper checks, so recipients will be paid through direct deposit instead.
As of Oct. 13, the federal government has been shut down for 12 days. Though many agencies have been closed, Social Security offices in Michigan remain open in person and online, and money will be sent out as scheduled, according to the Social Security Administration.
