Punjab Cabinet approves purchase of sniffer dogs to strengthen jail security

Chandigarh, October 13, 2025: In a major step to curb criminal activities and drug trafficking within prisons, the Punjab Cabinet on Monday approved the purchase of sniffer dogs for deployment in jails across the state.

A government spokesperson said the decision aims to enhance the level of visitor checks and strengthen overall security arrangements in prisons.

For this purpose, the Cabinet granted exemption under Section 63(1) of the Punjab Transparency in Public Procurement Act, 2019 to facilitate the purchase.

Under this decision, six sniffer dogs will be procured from the Border Security Force (BSF) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to meet the security requirements of the state’s
