The University of Alabama at Birmingham has fired Trent Dilfer as its head football coach, the school announced Sunday.

Dilfer, 53, was in his third season as UAB’s head coach. He coached the Blazers to a 9-21 record during his tenure, including a 2-4 record this season after Saturday’s 53-33 loss at Florida Atlantic.

“We have made a decision to part ways with Head Football Coach Trent Dilfer,” UAB Director of Athletics Mark Ingram said in a news release . “We agree that — unfortunately — our on-field performance has not lived up to the standard of winning we have for the program. This decision will allow us to move forward in the best long-term interest of the program.
