KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A man is facing months in prison for setting fire to an unhoused man's belongings while the man was sleeping outside, according to police.

Scott Hassler pleaded guilty to third degree arson and a controlled substance charge last week. He also pleaded guilty to a breaking and entering charge.

He was sentenced Monday, Oct. 6 to a total of 10 months with credit for 204 days served.

The charges date back to March 16, when Kalamazoo police received a report of a fire underneath a public library overhang. Investigators found Hassler had set fire to the blankets of a man sleeping outside.

The man was able to extinguish the blankets, but his shopping cart of belongings also caught fire. Police say he was not injured in the incident.
