A controversy escalated over an 8th-grade student wearing a hijab at a private Christian school located in Kochi, Kerala. After the situation worsened, St. Rita Public School, Palluruthy, declared a two-day holiday on Monday and Tuesday (October 13 and 14).

The school's Principal, Sister Helena RC, issued a letter stating that a student had started coming to school wearing a hijab (head covering) instead of the uniform. When the school management objected and stopped her at the gate, the student's parents called it a religious right and created a commotion.
