LAURENS COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) - The Laurens County Sheriff's Office is warning the public of a recent scam after receiving several reports from county residents.
The sheriff's office said they have gotten several reports of people receiving unexpected packages in the mail that contain jewelry and a card containing a QR code.
According to the sheriff's office, the sender of the package requests recipients scan the QR code with their phone.
The sheriff's office warned in a Facebook post Monday that the activity is part of what is known as a "brushing scam," where random items are sent to people to create fake online reviews or to collect personal data.
