As pressure builds on Jay Jones, the Democratic nominee for attorney general, the three Virginia sheriffs who had endorsed him are silent on whether they stand by him.

Meantime, the Republican Attorneys General Association announced Friday it had donated $2.5 million more to Republican incumbent Jason Miyares’ campaign after pouring $2 million into the race earlier this week.

Jones sent text messages in 2022 in which he mused about shooting then-Speaker of the House of Delegates Todd Gilbert, R-Shenandoah, and harming Gilbert’s children. The explosive texts became public Oct. 3 and have become the main focus of Virginia’s statewide elections.
