LAGRANGE/ELKHART COUNTIES, Ind. (WNDU) - Bird flu has returned to Michiana.
According to Purdue Extension, both LaGrange and Elkhart counties have farms that recently tested positive for the disease.
Those farms are now in quarantine to help prevent bird flu from spreading to other farms.
Producers are urged to maintain strong biosecurity practices. If your farm does not currently have a biosecurity plan, you’re urged to implement one.
You should also avoid sharing equipment or supplies between farms, as they can easily carry the virus.
Common symptoms in poultry include:
Decreased energy, appetite, and egg production
Sudden death without prior signs
Swelling of the head, comb, eyelids, wattles, or hocks
Nasal discharge, coughing, or sneezing
Purple discoloration of wattles, legs
