"We all want to just think, I can just do it myself," says Ghyrn Wakefield, Chief Development Officer with the Chattanooga Food Bank. "But that's not how life works ... the way life works is we're better together."
Since the government shutdown, 1.4 million federal workers have been impacted, including those in Chattanooga.
According to the Chattanooga Area Food Bank, 1 in 6 households in southeast Tennessee and northwest Georgia may not know where their next meal is coming from.
Federal workers are still without pay during the government shutdown. More families may need help.
Wakefield says "we're preparing for the potential of continued government shutdown is that, first of all, we're increasing our messaging." He adds, "We want to let families in our region know we are still here."
