A New York man was arrested for boating under the influence after a WaveRunner crash in Florida left two children hospitalized on Sunday, authorities said.

The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. in Madeira Beach, near St. Petersburg, when 48-year-old Daniel Patrick Grubert, of Piermont, New York, was operating a rented Yamaha WaveRunner near Johns Pass, Pinellas County Sheriff's Office officials said.

Authorities said Grubert was racing another personal watercraft and not looking ahead of him after he took his eyes off his direction of travel.

He turned around and realized he was about to crash into another rented WaveRunner so he jumped off his WaveRunner before the collision, officials said.
