MADISON (WKOW) -- Wisconsin is celebrating Indigenous People's Day on Monday by introducing two new bills.
The "Right of Nature" and "Prove it First" bills are meant to help protect the state's environmental resources.
The "Prove it First" bill would require mining companies to prove projects won't harm water resources before moving forward and recognize Devil's Lake's right to exist.
One speaker at the introduction, Menomonee Nation citizen, Guy Reiter, gave voice to the land alongside many others Monday.
"Nature is not property, it's our relative. You cannot poison the water without poisoning our children. You cannot clear cut the forest without cutting down our future. You cannot desecrate the land and expect the people to stay whole," Reiter said.
