WAUNAKEE, Wis. (WKOW) — Madison is surrounded by several lakes that provide life and shape the city to what it is today.

But an important part of what makes the lakes so beautiful starts on land.

Just off of US Highway 12 heading to Baraboo; pigs, cows, milk and alfalfa are seen during the fall season at Yahara Pride Farms in Waunakee.

Luke Laufenberg is a sixth-generation farmer and current owner of the farm who oversees the year-round operations.

"We own and operate 750 acres, and we raise pretty much all of our own feed stuff for our animals," Laufenberg said.

He commits to using sustainable farming and agriculture techniques to help protect the lakes. Using cover crop and no-till farming are among those techniques.
