ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Monday is Indigenous Peoples’ Day, a holiday that celebrates and honors Indigenous American peoples and commemorates their histories and cultures.
It was officially recognized by former President Joe Biden in 2021 on the same day as Columbus Day.
According to the Pew Research Center, 30 states and three U.S. territories recognize Columbus Day in some way, while 17 states and D.C. commemorate Indigenous people on that day; however, several recognize both.
The holiday recognizes native land and acknowledges the contributions Native Americans have made to the country.
