Nearly half of Barton County families are living paycheck to paycheck, according to data from United Way of Central Kansas (UWCK). These families, known as ALICE – Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed – are working hard but remain one unexpected expense away from financial crisis.
“ALICE families are the backbone of our community,” said Charell Owings, executive director of UWCK. “They are childcare workers, grocery clerks, and nursing assistants – the people who keep Barton County running. We’re here to make sure they’re not facing these challenges alone.”
