LAS VEGAS ( FOX5 ) — The iconic Las Vegas sign glowed in yellow, blue and orange Monday evening in celebration of Indigenous Peoples Day.

County leaders joined Native American advocates this morning to light the sign in commemoration of the holiday. The day is set aside by many states and municipalities — including Las Vegas, Henderson and North Las Vegas — to honor their Native American residents, their culture and their contributions.

Native American advocates said the commemoration is appropriate because the Las Vegas Valley was once populated only by members of the Paiute tribe.

“This land, regardless of where you are, where you stand today, where you’re standing at this exact moment or where you’re watching this, this land was and will always be ancestral tribal land,” said Mathi
