BUTLER COUNTY, Kan. (KSNT) - A man in Butler County recently came across a Kansas rattlesnake sporting an odd-looking appearance.

Stephen Chiles said he encountered the serpent while at an industrial site around 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9 about two miles west of El Dorado. He said it was his first time encountering a venomous snake like this in the wild.

"I was walking around the job site and he was basically bathing on the road," Chiles said.

The snake, identified as a western massasauga rattlesnake, appeared different when compared to others of its species. The Kansas Herpetofaunal Atlas reports these are among the smallest rattlesnakes in Kansas and are usually gray or light brown in coloration.
