TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) — A confirmed microburst ripped off roofs, knocked down semi-trucks and flooded neighborhoods in Tempe on Monday afternoon.
Wind gusts of up to 71 mph hit the East Valley city around 1 p.m. Significant damage spanned from Guadalupe to Elliott roads and from Kyrene to Rural roads, police said.
In the area of Guadalupe Road and Ash Avenue, which is just west of Kyrene Road, a massive tree was knocked down and hit a box truck. Witnesses say the storm didn’t sound so bad at first.
“Then it hit really fast. The wind started blowing, started ripping down the street,” said one man.
The wind and the rain were just on another level. “It was going horizontal down the street, just getting harder and harder,” he said.
There is debris everywhere. “It looks like a tornado hit.
