KENNEWICK, Wash. – Eastgate Elementary is set to host the inaugural Panther Opening Chess Tournament on October 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The event will gather 80 to 120 young chess players from grades K-12 across the Tri-Cities and surrounding areas.

At least 15 schools, including those from the Kennewick School District, will be represented.

Some schools will bring full teams, while others will have a few students or individual competitors, highlighting the growing interest in chess in the region.

This is the second chess tournament hosted by Eastgate, following the success of last spring's Panther Endgame event.
