HATTERAS, N.C. — North Carolina Highway 12 has reopened on Hatteras Island as of 5 p.m. Monday, but it remained closed on Ocracoke Island as crews continue efforts to repair damage from this weekend’s nor’easter.
On Sunday, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) deployed dump trucks from a nearby sand stockpile to begin rebuilding dunes that protect the roadway from storm surge and tidal flooding. Work continued throughout Monday.
Travelers are urged to check current road conditions before heading to the area. Updates are available at DriveNC.gov .
The closures came after heavy winds and tidal flooding over the weekend left sections of NC-12 impassable, stranding some residents and disrupting travel along the Outer Banks.
