Amid a successful year professionally, country singer Ashley Cooke revealed she has been diagnosed with Brugada syndrome, a rare and potentially life-threatening genetic heart condition.

Cooke revealed her condition in a TikTok video earlier this year. The diagnosis came during a challenging time for Cooke, who has also dealt with the deaths of both grandmothers, her father’s fifth recurrence of cancer and her mother’s near-fatal heart attack about four months ago.

“It’s a genetic thing called Brugada syndrome,” Cooke told Taste of Country . “A lot of my family members have passed away unexpectedly, very healthy and very young, from it. So it’s very scary.”

Cooke said her diagnosis was confirmed after multiple electrocardiogram (EKG) procedures. She is now working with a cardiologist
