LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The price of gold continues to soar to unprecedented heights. Monday it shattered previous records reaching over $4,100 per ounce.

Here in Central Kentucky, local jewelry stores are feeling the impact. Sheila Bayes says she’s never witnessed anything like it before.

“It’s a very unusual time,” said Bayes, who has been working in the jewelry business since she was 18.

She says never before has gold been worth so much money.

“Years ago, during the recession, we were buying gold, and it wasn’t even quite a thousand dollars an ounce. We’re dealing with gold now that is over four thousand dollars an ounce,” said Bayes, owner of Sheila Bayes Jewelers .
