Several communities along Alaska’s west coast — from Kipnuk to Kotzebue — are assessing the damage and beginning recovery efforts after the remnants of Typhoon Halong swept through the region last week.
Kotzebue, while spared the worst of the storm, is still feeling its effects. Mayor Derek Haviland-Lie expressed concern for neighboring communities hit harder by the storm, particularly in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to our neighbors down south and the Yukon-Kuskokwim area. The reports we've seen are devastating," said Mayor Haviland-Lie.
