An Apple Valley man died Sunday afternoon after his all-terrain vehicle collided with an SUV.

The incident occurred around 4:59 p.m. on Oct. 12 at the intersection of Navajo Road and Ottawa Road, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. The victim, identified as 40-year-old Juan M. Rodriguez Mendoza, was riding a blue 2002 Yamaha YFM660 when the collision happened.

Investigators said Rodriguez Mendoza was traveling westbound on Ottawa Road when he crossed Navajo Road from a stop sign, entering the lane of a southbound silver 2016 Honda CR-V driven by a 58-year-old Apple Valley man with two passengers. The SUV broadsided the ATV, ejecting Rodriguez Mendoza from the vehicle. He was transported to a local hospital for higher-level care, where he was later pronounced dead
