CHEYENNE — State lawmakers have advanced a bill intended to prohibit sexually explicit books from being housed in the children’s sections of public and school libraries, saying it will give more authority to parents and communities.

Some elected officials, however, said that the bill, as it is currently written, is a form of banning books, and that it exhibits unnecessary government overreach on parental rights. It also prohibits many sacred texts, including the Bible, the Quran and the Book of Mormon.

The bill draft, called “Sexually explicit materials in libraries-requirements,” was discussed Monday by the Wyoming Legislature’s Joint Judiciary Committee. The topic has been discussed throughout the state government interim session, and a final bill draft was approved when the members of
