Javed Akhtar criticises welcome for Taliban minister
Veteran screenwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar has expressed his deep disappointment over the warm reception given to Afghan Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi during his visit to India. Akhtar, known for his outspoken views, stated that he feels ashamed of the respect shown to a representative of what he termed the "world's worst terrorist group".
Muttaqi's visit marks the first time a Taliban leader has come to India since the group took control of Afghanistan in 2021. His trip follows a recent exemption granted by the UN Security Council's Taliban Sanctions Committee, which lifted travel restrictions on him.
On social media, Akhtar shared his thoughts, saying, "I hang my head in shame when I see the kind of respect and reception that has been given to the representative of the world's worst terrorists group Taliban by those who beat the pulpit against all kind of terrorists." He also condemned the Darul Uloom Deoband in Saharanpur for giving a grand welcome to Muttaqi, questioning, "Shame on Deoband too for giving such a reverent welcome to their 'Islamic Hero' who is one of those who have completely banned girls' education. My Indian brothers and sisters!!! what is happening to us?"
The visit has sparked mixed reactions online. While many users supported Akhtar's stance, others defended the government's decision, arguing that national interests should take precedence over moral considerations. One user remarked, "National interest is above all moral ideology. Who governs Afghanistan is for the Afghans to decide. India needs a strong foothold in Afghanistan and to work with whoever is in control."
As the debate continues, Akhtar's comments highlight the complex feelings surrounding the Taliban's presence in India and the implications of international relations in the region.
