Newark residents may soon face increased property tax and utility rates to balance next year's budget, but the future is looking even murkier.

Newark City Council told city staff at a recent meeting they would approve a 12% water race increase, along with 8% on sewer rates for FY 2026.

They also gave direction to City Manager Tom Coleman who put together a plan that would raise property taxes by 3.3%, or the 12-month Consumer Price Index, on top of the recent reassessment-based property tax increases a majority of Newark residents are currently trying to afford.
