T he multi-phase reconstruction of the North Water treatment plant has reached the halfway point, bringing closer to reality a facility with the capability of treating 70% of Gilbert’s available water supply once completed.

In an event last week commemorating this milestone for the $692 million project, Town Council members and staff pinned a “50% complete” sign on the project sign along Higley Road near Guadalupe Road.

The project began in Spring 2022 to address the plant’s crumbling infrastructure.

The 21-acre plant was originally built in the mid-1990s, when the town had to select contractors based on the lowest bid.

Town officials said this in turn led to shoddy work, requiring a renovation to support Gilbert residents’ future water requirements.
