COACHELLA — In a historic step toward Tribal co-stewardship of public lands, five Tribal Nations — the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians, the Fort Yuma Quechan Indian Tribe, the Cahuilla Band of Indians, the Chemehuevi Indian Tribe, and the Colorado River Indian Tribes (CRIT) — have announced the formation of the Chuckwalla National Monument Intertribal Commission.
The new Commission will play a central role in the long-term planning and management of the recently designated Chuckwalla National Monument, which protects more than 624,000 acres of ecologically and culturally significant desert land in Southern California.
