The Madison County Special Olympics is just around the corner, but organizers say they’re facing a big challenge: they don’t have nearly enough volunteers for their upcoming track and field event next Tuesday, the 21st.
Organizers say the biggest issue right now is that not enough people are aware of the event, and that’s why they’re sounding the alarm, hoping the community will show up and make an impact.
Next week’s event is set to bring together 535 athletes. But here’s the challenge: the organization wants to pair each athlete with two escorts to guide and support them during the games. Right now, they’ve only got about 515 volunteers, but they’re hoping to reach 1,200. That’s a big gap to fill with just a week to go.
