A shirtless man sitting on a park bench has been arrested after a three-hour stand-off with police.

Officers were called to Brisbane's Botanic Gardens about 1.35pm today over reports of a man sitting on a bench holding an edged weapon.

The public park was locked down as officers surrounded the man and specialist police began negotiations.

Negotiations continued for hours until the man was taken into custody about 4.35pm after police distracted him and fired non-lethal rounds.

He was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital with minor injuries.

The gardens have been reopened.

No charges have been laid and investigations are continuing.
