“We have a major crime problem here in Victoria. There are far too many victims of crime. No one should live in fear of people breaking into their homes overnight, stealing cars, carjackings, violence in the street, violence at retail outlets, knife crime. Victoria and the Victorian people should feel safe.” Thus spoke Victoria Police’s new chief commissioner, Mike Bush, on Monday.

The next morning, as if on cue, Melburnians going about their business in the CBD were witness to a police chase and arrest of a man in a lane off Bourke Street. He was allegedly carrying a gun. The arrest followed a string of alleged carjackings in Tarneit and North Melbourne. We could be forgiven for shrugging our shoulders
