UK householders are being warned of a £100 energy hike under Ofgem price cap rules. The grim forecast says bills will dip in January but then face a substantial increase in April.

The regulator's cap has just increased by £35 from £1,720 to £1,755 since the start of October. This is the maximum annual amount suppliers can charge for each unit of energy and standing charge if you're on a standard variable tariff.

Rising charges to operate and maintain Great Britain's electricity and gas networks, alongside a slight increase in a levy to support the next generation of nuclear power stations, are forecast to push the price cap around £100 higher in April compared with January, analysts at Cornwall Insight suggest.
