Each fall cold front signals migratory birds to head south. Hays Woods Park in Pittsburgh has become a popular pit stop for these birds to refuel on their journey.
"Hays Woods hosts a lot of birds," said Nick Liadis, founder and executive director of BirdLab. "We catch more birds here and more species than any of our other study sites, which is something that we weren't expecting when we started this project." Advertisement
Initially, the popularity of Hays Woods Park was a surprise. Liadis established BirdLab to study the habits of migratory birds in rural, suburban, and urban settings around western Pennsylvania.
"From a bird's eye perspective, up in the sky, they see all this urbanization, but then they see Hays Woods ... And we're up in elevation a little bit," he sai
