If you found the word 'dog' suddenly becomes unfamiliar, you've just experienced the phenomenon known as 'jamais vu'.

This is based on an experiment conducted by researchers with undergraduate students. They found that 70 per cent of participants could manage about 33 repetitions for a minute before they stopped because the word felt strange.

The effect was stronger with more common words - when they tried 'the', 55 per cent of people reported feeling jamais vu before stopping after about 27 repetitions.
