A mother alleged to have murdered her own baby has told a court that her husband headbutted their son and "banged him on the bed" within days of him being brought home from hospital.

Nivalda Santos Pirjani and her partner Klevi are currently on trial charged with the murder of their child Miguel Pirjani, who died aged 13 weeks in November last year.

The couple are accused of "systematically abusing" their baby before his death after he was found to have suffered numerous broken bones and a bleed on the brain. Both deny this charge, although the mother has admitted causing or allowing the death of a child.

Nivalda Pirjani told Liverpool Crown Court that she first moved to the UK from the Portuguese island of Madeira in 2007.
